free Friday

I love these early finishes on Friday!  Got to relax and work on my assignment whilst I was in Sylvia Park.  The great thing about free wireless is that you don’t have to even been in the store to use it – Skyped with Tommy (who’s doin’ fine in Canada) whilst we were havin’ lunch in Burger Fuel.  RB seems alright too, though a touch homesick and undertexted.

Also finished one assignment – I’m onto it!  Alright, prepping for the weekend.

I dropped a class

Not much to say, except that I’m pretty envious of Rainbow and Tommy and all their exciting breathtaking travels.  One day I’ll have the means to do the same – I’d better try a different country to get some variety in our collective photobooks!  RB if you read this, I’d love to have a full-sized picture of the beautiful Lake Louise and the chatel you had lunch at.  Thanks for the postcard!

Oh yes, the title – I dropped Chinese 210.  I know, shock horror.  But I decided to do it within the 2-week grace period… pretty much the level of Chinese is just a bit too high for me.  110 was perfect for me – whilst I’m harrassing my Chinese dictionary full-time during Nora Yao’s classes, which was a bit disconcerting.  I may keep attending lectures though, and see what she says.  Teehee.

Two assignments to work on – aside from the food diary thing (you feel very bad writing in 150g of Rocky Road Ice cream, or 170g of Domino’s Pizza, haha) we also have a motor control lab report to type up.  Might start on that tomorrow and Friday.  These readings are actually really interesting, but there’s a lot to do.

Got tickets to see the Macleans production.  This year it’s “Beauty and the Beast”… Disney songs are the most lyrical and well-written.  Those lyrics are very timeless, lots of people would agree with that!  Anyways, gotta sleep.  Take care!

One of my uni assignments requires a meticulous tracking of the foods I’m eating.  I even have to weigh them as much as I can.  So my lunchtime noodles had to be broken down like this:

  • 250 g egg noodles
  • 100 g silverbeet
  • 50 g Shaved Ham
    • EN: 109 kcal
    • PRO: 160 g
    • Fat: 2 g (0.8 g sat)
    • CHO: 7 g (0.9 g sug)
    • Sodium: 1300 mg
  • 2 chicken eggs
  • 15 ml Kikkoman Soy Sauce

The work required kinda puts me off eating complicated foods, or foods without weight and nutritional breakdowns.  Mleh.

As part of my Chinese revision, I break down lyrics from Chinese pop artists.  I’m on my 2nd song, but at the moment it’s very interesting how succinct and abstract these lyrics can be.  The first line of one of Jay Chow’s songs is only 15 characters, but has the following:

“As the eaves are like cliffs, and as the chimes are like the blue seas, I wait for the swallow to return.”

… how are eaves like cliffs?  How are wind chimes like blue seas?  How profound.

(No spoilers in this post, so you can rest easy)

Very hardcore people lining up in a queue that stretched all the way from the information desk in the middle of Borders Sylvia Park, through the glass doors and to the stairs leading up to Hoyts Cinemas. Insane.

Arron was queuing up for me though, so after teaching finished at 11, I made my way through and he had my book already. It’s a pretty good read: it feels like you’ve grown up with this bespectacled Wizard (by the way the last picture in that group above is of Henry dressed up as the Wizard Boy himself) through the seven books. The literary term is a bildungsroman story – a coming-of-age book where he finally discovers all the answers and all the loose ends get tied up.

If I had the time I’d read it again.

Excellent 21st dinner at the Gengis Khan Mongolian BBQ Restaurant. Nick’s birthday went very well, good tributes and mentions of his attributes and qualities, and Jared is officially going out with Kristy it has transpired. Some very dangerously soppy texts in his inbox (not from me), lol.

First week back of uni has been relatively cruisy so far. Quite fond of my papers, even though 304 seems admittedly a touch flakey. Take care!

Who on earth would choose a stage name as strange as “no name”? Yesterday I heard for the first time Yú Xiàn Zh?ng’s new single, “Shouldn’t Be Without You”. Aside from his really stupid nickname, this new song is actually really good! The last line in the chorus goes “… because, my world shouldn’t be without you…” – I’m sure I could say this phrase to lots of people (not just lovers, family, friends…)

Also, when the Esus4 chord in the background of the chorus comes on… man I could loop this track 100 times and not get sick of it!

The music video is actually a TV ad. Let’s just say after listening to this song I feel like eating…

lol!

Anyways, I’m off to work – more “blogging” when I get back… see ya later!

Music – Pop #3: Breeze

Comments Off | This entry was posted on Jul 17 2007

carried on the breeze

This was the other song we managed to do during the holidays!

Ideas for this song came from a long summers’ afternoon, initially out on the grass fields of suburban Bucklands Beach. Using the trigger word “breeze”, and Cheryl’s phrase “a goblet of blue” to refer to the immensely azure sky we sat above.

I’m quite happy with the continuous strumming pattern that plays much like grass continuously billowing across a hill, for instance. It’s a short song, just guitar and vocals. If I get some time I’ll change it round a bit, maybe bulk up with drums, bass etc.

Jared amidst all his postgraduate hectic workload, kindly offered me a morning of recording time in one of the professionally set-up studios in the KMC building. I gave him a fair amount of liberty to process our raw recording, and he duly obliged: have a listen!

“Breeze” – WILLIAM CHONG
Lyrics

The sky is a goblet of blue
Above the rippling emerald slopes
I’m sitting here on my own
Waiting for the breeze

The trees on the hillside sway
Branches waving at me in the corner
I’m sitting here on my own
Waiting for the breeze (2x)

Breeze, carry my hopes in your hands
You’re gently caressing the faces
of those you meet,
Breeze, I’m sitting here waiting
Change your direction to me

The leaves on the treetops dance
And peel off their yellow bells
I’m sitting here on my own,
Hoping that one day the bells will peal for me
Hoping that I’ll see the breeze passing through

Take a look, see the trees raise their hands to you
Take a look: hear the hills play the sound of your music
It’s parting the veil on my heart

More music here.

My Chinese210 lectures will be at a totally different level compared to last semester! My gosh – aside from the first 5 minutes, our lecturer spoke exclusively in Mandarin Chinese. Our handouts are also in Chinese, so I’m sure I’ll end up doing remedial studying to build up my reading, if not writing of all these as yet unknown characters.

Other courses starting off well – 305 and 206 are both reasonably interesting, and we’ll see what happens with the dreaded 304 – Sports Psychology come Friday. Going to breakfast with Aunty Yao tomorrow morning, other than that it’s a pretty cruisy week in.

Take care!

Today, being the lazy Sunday it was, paperclip had a fabulous time playing Texas Hold ‘em and Blackjack all afternoon and evening. It was fantastic stuff! Even Jacob who’s leaving for American Bible College had a bit of fun with cards, as well as playing a little on the PS3. In blackjack, Hsuan joined us from his break in UNSW and we had a good time catching up with him – his new career direction now includes particpating in Christian ministry, which is such a fabulous development! Will most likely see him on Friday, he’s considering hosting a do at his place.

One thing to point out regarding Blackjack was that it eventually turned to a teamwork versus the House (that was me) game – they all invested very heavily in each other, but without card-counting and serious mathematical prowess I eventually ate up all their hard-earned (not) cash.

Oh, starting classes again on Monday. It’s the end of the road! How intriguing. Last 12 weeks of structured university study in conjunction with examinations. Bring it on!
